UCC Cancels Hawaii Convention Because of Airfare

09/10/2008

If you’re planning a national conference or convention, considering how far people have to fly – and how expensive it will be – should be a major consideration. The United Church of Christ announced yesterday that it will not host its 2011 national convention in Honolulu because of concerns about airfare.

About 3,000 participants would have flown across the Pacific to Hawaii’s state capital for the event, but now the church will select a new site, though they haven’t announced where it will be. Part of the decision came from the fact that the average fare for a flight to Honolulu from Cleveland, UCC headquarters, rose from $600 in November of last year to more than $900 this month.

The UCC stated in a memo that they wish members in the contiguous 48 states could experience the rich culture of Hawaii as part of the convention, but their concerns about a lack of registrations and over-burdening their members take precedence.
