Outreach magazine recently released its annual list of the top 100 (actually 103) largest and fastest-growing churches in the United States. All 103 churches report weekly attendances of at least 7,000 with seven churches reporting exactly that number. The Rev. Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston tops the list again this year with 43,500 attendees, down from 47,000 in 2007. At No. 2 is Second Baptist Church – also in Houston – with 23,659. No. 3 belongs to North Point Community Church in Alpharetta, Ga., which reports 22,557 weekly attendees. Pastor Bill Hybels-led Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Ill., came in at No. 4 but also reported a decline, dropping from 23,500 in 2007 to 22,500 this year. Pastor Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., reported a dip from 22,000 attendees to 19,414, putting it at No. 8 on the list, down four spots from last year. The complete list is available in the current bonus issue of Outreach, which can be downloaded here for $4.95.
