S. Baptists: Palin is OK as VP, Not OK as Pastor

10/03/2008

Sarah Palin’s candidacy has caused the Southern Baptist Convention to answer questions about its position regarding a women being vice president. Representatives from the SBC say Sarah Palin’s vice presidential candidacy is acceptable, but the organization still does not condone women becoming pastors or working outside the home without their husbands’ permission.

Offering explanation, most representatives say that who should serve in public office is not something the Bible addresses, unlike pastor leadership or marital roles. Similarly, they note that Todd Palin has been publicly supportive of his wife throughout her political career, including her being governor of Alaska.

The only concerns addressed about Palin seem to be whether or not her being a high-ranking federal executive will compromise her ability to care for her children, which Baptists affirm is the most important role for women.

Though the SBC does not agree with ordaining women, it leaves pastoral decisions to each autonomous church.
