Reaching Out to Men Creates Challenge (Fishers of Men)

The study “Men’s Changing Contribution to Housework and Child Care,” by Oriel Sullivan of Ben Gurion University and Scott Coltrane of University of California-Riverside, reveals that from the 1960s to the 21st century, men doubled their contribution in housework and tripled the amount of time spent caring for their children. Taking on greater commitments of emotion and involvement in the family, the modern man needs Christ more than ever – but what depiction of Christ are they getting?

With the rise of Bill McCartney’s Promise Keepers in the 1990s, churches gained a new awareness of the importance of reaching out to men in a fast-changing society. With many conflicting ideas of manhood circulating in media, schools and homes, the need for bonding and leadership among men came to the forefront.

While the need is evident, before sending out the male segment of your congregation to reach the unchurched, one question should be asked: What does your church teach its men about being men? A key challenge for many churches seems to be addressing the perception of Christ’s total character.
