Churches Facing Hard Times

Churches across the country continue to slash expenses and make cutbacks with some postponing or downsizing building projects and expansions.

Though many pastors and church leaders report that their giving has not taking a sizable hit, they are preparing for a dry well of offering combined with an onslaught of ministry demands from their hard-hit communities.

Churches that seem to be doing the best are ones that have consistently preached tithing among their congregations. Churches that are feeling it the most are ones that depend on income from investments – usually churches affiliated with larger denominations. The Episcopal Church reports that its endowment funds have dropped by 30 percent this year. The United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, affiliated with the United Methodist Church, has announced that it will cut next year’s budget by $2 million because of decreased investment income, no doubt a result of the financial crisis.
