Mics, Mixers, Speakers and More

The world of church audio is constantly changing and multitudes of new products consistently rise to the occasion. But wading through the latest innovations could take awhile. So Church Business® asked the companies that perform church installations on a regular basis to share their picks for the latest and most popular microphones, mixers, speakers and portable systems.

Microphones

DM Series Drum/Percussion/Instrument Dynamic Microphones

DM-70

DM series microphones are designed for live use or recording close-miking of all types of drums and percussion instruments. These models are also intended for accurate sonic reproduction of brass, woodwind and other instruments producing high sound fields. The DM Series is available in two models, the DM 70 (for snare drums, toms, all percussion, brass and woodwinds) and the DM 80 (a kick drum mic with extended low-end response specially tailored for bass drums and other large diameter drums). Both are constructed of metal for reliability, and feature gold-plated XLR for maximum conductivity. Their cardioid pattern allows close miking without bleed-through from other drum kit pieces. Information provided by Nady Systems, Inc.

AKG D3700S Dynamic Microphone

The AKG D3700S provides extended frequency response for crisp sound with a special elastomer ring for suppression of handling noise. This microphone also features a hypercardioid pattern for high gain before feedback. Other features include high-sensitivity NdFeBr magnet system, silent on/off switch and a rugged die-cast housing with shock-mounted stainless wire mesh grill. Information provided by ConnectSound.

IRW Series Infrared Wireless Mic Systems

IRW-210

Designed as an alternative to RF wireless mics for situations in which RF congestion or privacy issues are a concern, the IRW Series offers audio and solid reception for all speaking applications. Each of these systems is designed specifically for small space wireless mic applications, including conference/ meeting rooms, classrooms, churches, health clubs and small auditoriums. Three systems are available: the IRW-210 system with single-channel receiver and transmitter; the IRW-1PA single-channel wireless 20W portable PA and transmitter; and the IRW-220 system with dual-channel receiver and two transmitters. All three systems are available with choice of handheld mic or bodypack lavalier/headset mic transmitters that operate up to six hours on two AA alkaline batteries or up to 10 hours on two Ni-MH rechargeable AA batteries. The systems are intended for indoor use only, even in well-lighted areas. Range can be extended in any direction for 40 feet or more with optional wall or ceiling mount sensors that connect to the receiver. The systems won't transmit through walls, so any number of units can be used in the same building without the interference often encountered in multiple RF (VHF and/or UHF) wireless mic setups. Information provided by Nady Systems, Inc.

DPA Type 4060-FM Miniature Microphone

Danish Pro Audio's Type 4060-FM (beige color) is a miniature prepolarized omnidirectional condenser microphone that can be used for houses of worship and theatrical applications. It is easily adaptable to function with various wireless systems and also has 48V phantom power. The microphone contains a vertical diaphragm and has been engineered to excel at sound reinforcement when placed on the body. The 4060-FM includes such features as a double vent protection system (helping to reduce humidity) and modifiable protection grids (enabling the sound technician to make acoustical changes depending on placement of the microphone). Information provided by ConnectSound.

SCM Series Studio Microphones

SCM 910

Five models are available in the SCM Series, intended for recording studio vocals, acoustic instruments, orchestras and choral groups, ambient instrument audio, and many live sound applications. The SCM 900, 910 and 920 microphones feature transformer-coupled balanced outputs, true condenser design, full frequency response, transparent audio and a choice of three configurations ranging from cardioid only to selectable low-cut filter and omni or cardioid polar patterns. The SCM 980 and 1000 models are designed for exceptionally low self-noise and increased dynamic range; enhanced low and high-end response with improved linearity across the frequency range; and maximum SPL capacity. Ultra-thin diaphragms provide accurate transient response. The 980 is a cardioid-pattern mic with selectable low-cut filter, and the 1000 offers vintage look and tone. Information provided by Nady Systems, Inc.

Beyerdynamic Opus 81

This condenser microphone is designed to seamlessly benefit vocals and sound reinforcement by providing a wide and linear frequency response (50-18,000 Hz). Sound technicians will find the cardioid polar pattern and the frequency response help provide a clear sound and supply them with gain-before-feedback. The microphone is built ergonomically for comfortable handling. Information provided by ConnectSound.

Crest X-Four 8+4x4 Mixer Console

Combining results with diversity, the X-Four is designed for churches that demand a professional console to run their services but have some space limitations. The X-Four doubles as an FOH console and also as a stage monitor allowing multiple uses from a small mixer. However, despite its misleading size, the X-Four is a professional speaker with a multitude of features. These include eight mono mic/line input channels and four stereo line input channels complete with four-band EQ on both the mono and stereo input channels. In addition, all primary outputs are fully balanced and the mic and line inputs are also balanced. The X-Four also features signal monitoring on all the input and output fader channels. Crest manufactures the X-Four with individual circuit boards for each input channel, thus improving stability and access to the boards. The company also builds the chassis with solid 14-gauge steel for strength and protection from the "road warriors." Information provided by ConnectSound.

OMNI360™ Satellite/Sub Speaker System

OMNI 360 Satellites & Subwoofers

According to SoundTube Entertainment, its Omni360™ satellite RS/CM50 and the OMNI360™ RS/CM8SB subwoofers are ideal for commercial, consumer and outdoor use, and were designed to compliment the company's line of omnidirectional speakers. The 5.25-inch two-way Omni360™ RS/CM50 and eight-inch RS/CM8SB both use SoundTube's proprietary Zero Reflection™ enclosure technology which eliminates standing wave distortion and boxy colorations for smoother response, superior bass and extraordinary realism. The two-way satellite RS50 (open ceiling) and CM50 (drop ceilings) were designed for smaller venues as a stand-alone speaker, or to be used with SoundTube's new omnidirectional subwoofer. All are available in either 8 ohm or 70/100V versions. The eight-inch RS8SB and CM8SB are the first subwoofers to emply Omni-Dispersion technology to improve performance, coverage and blending with satellites.

Driver Protection Circuitry

All SoundTube RS (open ceiling) and CM (surface mount) speakers now use driver protection circuitry for both tweeter and mid-range driver protection. The system was designed for clients who want loud music or paging capabilities. The new protection circuitry has minimized failure potential and is audibly detectable while active. The Omni360 speaker line includes models for surface mount, open ceiling, outdoor and satellite/ subwoofer applications. In addition, FocusPoint™ SoundDome™ offers solutions to sound focusing changes.

Full Frequency 70/100 Volt Transformer

SoundTube Entertainment offers improved transformers with increased frequency capabilities, designed to accommodate both domestic and international applications. These new transformers increase bass-response and overall audio performance via wider frequency capabilities. According to the company, the goal was to create a transformer that would not hurt audio quality but provide true full frequency with the convenience of 70 and 100 volts.

Sound Bridge 3815HT

A full-range three-way system, the Sound Bridge 3815HT is designed for a wide variety of speech and music applications including churches, clubs or concert settings. This model is actually the second generation of this product after a minor re-tooling of the entire Sound Bridge line. The 3815HT is a trapezoidal speaker with a curved front and constructed with 3/4-inch 13-ply Baltic birch plywood. It is coated with a waterproof protective adhesive, then covered with ozite carpeting. Inside the enclosure is a 15-inch cast aluminum low frequency driver, eight-inch midrange driver, and a one-inch titanium high frequency compression driver coupled to a 70-degree (vertical) by a 110-degree (horizontal) horn. In total, the cabinet weighs 77 pounds and is 19.3 inches high and 20.8 inches wide, with a depth of 38 inches. This model has a power rating of 500 watts and a patented overload protection circuitry as a standard feature, which makes it possible to offer a 10-year warranty on the unit. Information provided by ConnectSound.

Soundsphere Q-CS Loudspeaker

The Model Q-CS, optimized for recessed mounting in low ceiling (8 to 14 ft.) applications, features a full hemispherical coverage pattern, accurate full frequency sound, high sensitivity (90dB SPL 1 watt/ 1 meter) and maximum power handling capability of 15 watts. The new Q-CS differs from other ceiling loudspeakers in that the tonal balance of the sound does not change even as the listener moves off-axis. A patent pending enclosure means the Q-SC acheives off-axis frequency response without requiring electronic processing for crisp, accurate voice announcements and full-range music reproduction for use in office buildings, restaurants, courtrooms, small retail stores, hotel lobbies and more. Due to the loudspeakers' wide, even coverage--360 degrees in the horizontal plane and 180 degrees in the vertical plane--fewer loudspeakers are needed in most all installations.

ProPower Series™

Four versatile models are available in the ProPower small PA speaker series: the PS112, PS115, PTS515 and PFW12. All are full-range, two-way speakers with horns and varying program power ratings and woofer sizes. The PS112 features a 12-inch woofer, 5- by 15-inch horn and 300W program power rating. The PTS515 offers these same features but has a 400W rating and a trapezoid speaker enclosure. The PS115 features a 15-inch woofer, 5- by 15-inch horn and 500W rating. The PFW12 is a floor wedge monitor speaker with 12-inch woofer, 4- by 14-inch horn and 400W rating. Additional Sound Innovations

Online Optisystem™ Configurator

Expert software automatically assembles and configures sound reinforcement systems over the Internet at www.connectsound.com/configurator. The system was specifically engineered to let musicians, deejays and houses of worship rapidly configure sound systems. Contractors may also use Optisystem™ to obtain quotations for small projects and order the products from the ConnectSound Web site. Users answer prompts and may select either Novice- or Advanced-level questions. According to the company, the entire series of questions will take an experienced sound person less than one minute to complete, and even a person with literally no sound knowledge can finish them in less than five minutes. All the system needs to know is the type of application, type of system, budget, types of signals, amount and type of microphones, venue size and other related information. Once these questions are answered, Optisystem™ first matches the technical specifications of the products. The optimal components are then selected, including speakers, subwoofers, power amplifiers, microphones, mixers and more. Each selection is displayed with key performance specifications including reliability ratings and reviews, drop ship ability, and shipping weight. Appropriate cables are then selected to interconnect the components. All of these steps are performed within the given budget and price discounts are built into the configuration process. Users may modify, add or delete any item after the configuration is chosen.
